The short version
This website asks for your email address, so we can tell you when Afterword's early access opens and send a free license to the first 25 supporters. If you become a founding member, Dodo Payments or Stripe handles the payment. We don't sell your information, and you can leave the list at any time.
What we collect
- Your email address, when you submit the signup form. We also note that you signed up from this site and when.
- Payment details, if you become a founding member. Dodo Payments or Stripe collects your card or other payment details on its own checkout page. We never see your full card number. They share with us your email, name, plan and payment status, so we can manage your membership and refunds. Dodo Payments is the merchant of record for the sales it handles, so it keeps its own records of them for tax purposes.
- Anonymous visit counts. We use Vercel Web Analytics to see page views, referring sites, countries and device types in aggregate. It doesn't use cookies and doesn't identify you.
- A few things in your own browser. The site remembers your light or dark theme, plus the email you signed up with and your place in line, so it can show that you're on the list. These stay in your browser's local storage and are never sent to us.
How we use your email
To send you early-access news about Afterword, and your license if you're one of the first 25. Reply "unsubscribe" to any email and we'll stop writing to you.
Who handles it
Signups are stored in a private Google Sheet that only we can open, and emails are sent from our Google account. Payments are processed by Dodo Payments, under Dodo's privacy policy, or by Stripe, under Stripe's privacy policy. The website is hosted by Vercel. Google, Dodo Payments, Stripe and Vercel may process this information in the United States. We don't sell or share your email with anyone else.
How long we keep it
Your email: until you unsubscribe or ask us to delete it, or until we stop running the list, whichever comes first. Payment records: as long as tax and accounting law requires, which Dodo Payments and Stripe keep.
About the app
Afterword records and transcribes on your Mac with Apple's on-device speech models. Your audio is never saved or sent anywhere, and your transcripts and notes stay in the folder you choose. The summaries are written by Apple Intelligence on your Mac.
The app only goes online for three small things:
- Activation. A founding key is sent once (the key and nothing else) to our signup sheet's script, which sends back your signed license; after that it's checked offline. A membership key from Dodo Payments is sent to Dodo with your Mac's name (like "Sam's MacBook Pro"), so you can see and free your Macs, and checked with Dodo a few times a day so a cancelled membership stops.
- Updates. Once a day it reads a short list of versions from this website, to see if there's a new one. It sends your app and macOS version, as every Mac app that updates itself does.
- Calendar and Reminders, if you turn them on. These are read and written by macOS on your Mac, through Apple's own permissions. Nothing from them is sent to us.
Your choices
Reply "unsubscribe" to any email from us and we'll stop writing to you. Reply "delete" and we'll remove your address from the list completely. You can also ask for a copy of what we hold about you, which is your email address and the date you signed up.
Children
This list is not meant for children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect their email addresses.
Changes
If this policy changes in a way that matters, we'll update the date above and tell everyone on the list by email.
